When I think of the biggest area of need I’ve observed in my kids the past 3 years is the social-emotional learning piece. I’ve been researching and brainstorming ways I could help my students grow in this area in the years to come. I’ve landed on implementing ‘soft starts’ in my classroom in the morning. The objective of soft starts is to give students time to create relationships, reduce anxiety, and build a sense of belonging in the classroom. This would be used in the time period between when students arrive and when the bell rings. My hope is that this will help students build the social skills and emotional regulation needed throughout the day!
