My name is Colette Chapman and I am a social worker in Hempstead, New York.
Many of the students and families I work with face ongoing challenges including
financial hardship, food insecurity, and housing instability.
I am working to
create a space within the school that offers more than just support. I want it
to be a warm and welcoming environment where students feel safe, valued, and
cared for.
In this space, I hope to include fidgets that students can use in
class without drawing attention. I would love to add soft rugs and curtains to
create a calming atmosphere, gentle lighting to reduce stress, and essential
oil diffusers to help students relax. I also plan to provide light snacks for
those who come in hungry or are waiting for lunch, basic hygiene products to
help them feel clean and confident, and organizational tools so they can access
what they need easily and independently.
The students I work with are truly
incredible. They show up every day and try their best no matter they are
facing.
